What is really interesting about this book, is that so many experiences are very recognizable. It explains accurately how the society structures in connection with racism and other social irregularities are wired. This part about self presentation is a good example. The white dutch people aggressively hold onto the way things are right now and are afraid of making space for other people, cultures and ethnicities. They almost demand you to forget about your culture as much as possible, unless there is a part they like. If you are not white, you are mostly seen and called allochtoon which points out that you are not from here.

What I think is really good about the way Gloria Wekker writes about this subject is that it is very clear and she connects the dots, you sometimes didn’t notice with the elements you definitely did notice. She mentions the history, where both sides were dehumanized by acting on these malicious acts and undergoing them.

The part that really got me, was the part where she connected the information with the second world war. Especially, because a lot of times when you talk about slavery or something within the racism spectrum, someone tries to compare world war two to slavery. And although you can not compare the two, there are some parts quite similar. The ways enslaved were treated were perfected and was used on Jewish people during this time. The problematic thing about pointing out the second world war, is that it distracts from the way the Netherlands has been handling during the time period of colonization. This part is not even mentioned properly within the history at school and there for has a very one sided part of the story.
